Inside the sound of Jamie xx
Categories: anna, new music, video

Yesterday I spent a couple of hours listening to an exclusive mix for BBC Radio by Jamie xx, the DJ behind the distinctive sound of the xx who’s also recently forged a  remixing style all his own. Streaming for the next few days at BBC’s Radio 6, it’s a fascinating look into the eclectic playlist of a dedicated music fan, one whose influences range from vintage soul to trip-hop to obscure British dubstep to skittery South African electro.

Also in the mix are some of Jamie xx’s own tunes, including several songs from his brand-new remix album of jazz great Gil Scott-Heron, We’re New Here. Released today on Beggars Group USA, We’re New Here sees Jamie xx fusing his signature wobbly-pitched, unpredictable sound with Scott-Heron’s gritty vocals–and the resulting creature takes on a vivid new life of its own.
