New Senegal Food Crisis Video From Oxfam Featuring Music By Sidi Toure

Oxfam America recently released a stirring video highlighting their response to the food crisis in Eastern Senegal, which features the stunning track “Euzo” by Sidi Touré, one of Mali’s most beloved musicians.

Touré’s excellent new album, Koïma, was recently released in the US by Thrill Jockey, and Touré is currently touring the US and Canada in support of the release:

The awesome folks at ATP have announced dates and talent for a new I’ll Be Your Mirror event in Asbury Park, NJ, the Saturday night of which will be headlined by The Afghan Whigs (who have reunited after a 13 year hiatus) and curated by their frontman Greg Dulli.

Dates are Friday, September 21st through Sunday the 23rd, and tickets go on sale this Monday At 10AM EST via www.ATPfestival.com. Three-day passes are priced at $199 for the weekend, until March 27 when any remaining tickets will go up to $249.

Stone Roses To Reform

London’s The Sun is reporting that The Stone Roses will announce their reunion , with full original lineup, at a press conference on Tuesday.

From The Sun:

“A source said: “It has been a tense few months putting the reunion together. A lot of issues had to be resolved and some seriously hard graft has gone on. It was political, it was emotional and it was difficult. But time is a great healer and everyone has grown up.”"

If you loved Keith Richards’ autobiography, Life, and wished there was a companion book by Mick Jagger…the next best thing is out this week.

Jagger: Rebel, Rockstar, Rambler, Rogue, is sort of an “answer” book by Marc Spitz…not necessarily on behalf of Jagger, but more likely in-defense of the Mickster.

I loved the book, and as a Stones fan, was amazed at how much new information I learned from Spitz here.

Oxfam’s new campaign to build a better food system starts today and they are launching with a new video featuring music from Architecture In Helsinki:

By “better food system”, Oxfam is referring to one that produces enough for a growing population and empowers poor people to earn a living, feed their families, and thrive.

Song of the Week: Dirty Beaches, “Lord Knows Best”

A couple of years ago I made a mix of songs from and inspired by the films of David Lynch. I wish this Dirty Beaches song had existed then, because it would have been a perfect addition. I can almost see the record spinning while the pine trees of Twin Peaks sway ominously in the wind, and Laura Palmer speeds away on a motorcycle into the haunted night. Dirty Beaches, get ready for a Lynch phone call sometime soon.

SXSW 2011: 6 reviews & a mix

At the pace of the uber-fast, Twitter-ific world we live in now, last month’s SXSW 2011 music festival might be already gone and forgotten. But for some of us (like me) the experience still resonates. Thirty-plus live shows, tons of memorable moments, and a whole lot of tofu kimchi tacos from a food truck: it was all part of the world’s biggest and most exciting live music festival. I just hope I can go again. And even if you weren’t there (or you’ve already forgotten) you can share the experience two ways:
